3_derma 1_derma 2_dermaWhat happens to our skin as we age?

Starting around age 25, our skin’s natural regenerative process begins to slow down. The properties that keep it firm and supple begin to go away, along with the skin’s ability to hold on to moisture-a double whammy on the road to looking older.

As the years go by, the skin becomes even more delicate and sensitive, providing a less effective barrier against harmful free-radicals; making it dry, tight, and even red. Hormonal changes later in life contribute to these negative changes; loss of collagen, elastin and subcutaneous fat lead to a dryer and looser appearance. Add in the reduction of blood vessels, and your poor skin gradually loses its youthful color and glow.

Of course, the sun and other weather conditions don’t help matters-they also factor in; creating dryness, wrinkles and changes in pigmentation. Put all that together and quite simply, you’re dealing with parched skin, expression lines and wrinkles, reduced elasticity, sun marks, pigmentation and vascular changes. Yikes! Sounds dire, doesn’t it? Keep reading, because there’s good news.

Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) Photo-rejuvenation represents an exciting procedure designed to produce younger and healthier looking skin. Based on studies performed worldwide, and published in peer- reviewed medical journals – IPL can help you achieve a younger and fresher look beyond what face creams can do. As the name suggests, IPL is an intense broadband of light that is applied to the skin to treat several skin conditions.

Who benefits from IPL Photo-rejuvenation?

As most of us age we begin to see small but visible signs of Sun damage appearing in our complexion. This may include freckles, broken capillaries, dark spots, a blotchy skin color and redness of the face and neck IPL can be used to treat these vascular redness, pigmented brown spots, sun damage, and collagen structure all at once.

How long does each treatment take?

A full-face treatment takes less than 10 minutes. Fairly dramatic improvements can now be accomplished with little or no downtime and with very minimal discomfort. A total of 3-5 treatments spaced one month apart is recommended for optimal results.

Does it hurt?

No, IPL treatment is not painful. A warm tingling sensation is felt during treatment. Some may experience a small brown crust (much like coffee powder) for a few days. Subsequently your skin will look smoother and fresher. Only precaution to be taken is regular application of sun screen lotion.

Laser therapy is one of the most exciting treatments for removing unwanted pigments in the skin such as age spots, lentiginess (liver spots), freckles, café-au-lait, Hori nevus and tattoos.

Laser work is performed by emitting a specialized light that is passed through the skin and preferentially absorbed by the unwanted pigment target. The pigments then break up and disappear. The laser can also be used for skin rejuvenation.

The treatment feels like a rubber band snapping. An anesthetic cream is usually applied one hour before treatment. Some redness and swelling may be expected, but soon you can return to your normal activities. Only precaution to be taken is regular application of Sunscreen lotion.

Lasers work by emitting a specialized light that is passed through the skin and preferentially absorbed by the hair. The laser used in hair removal targets the melanin in the hair follicle, thus damaging the follicle and removing the hair.

Laser hair removal is safe enough to be used on all body parts including the face, upper lip, back, underarms, arms, bikini line and legs.

Laser hair removal gives a prickly or a light rubber-band snapping sensation. You may not need any type of anesthesia for your treatments. However, if larger or sensitive areas are to be treated, a topical anesthesia cream is applied one hour before treatment. No specific care is needed after the treatment. The treated hair will not fall out until 2 weeks later.

An upper lip and chin can b e done in 5 minutes. Underarms or bikini lines usually take 10-15 minutes. Legs and back take longer.

Hair goes through different growth phases and lasers work most effectively against hair that is in the active growth phase. Initially, it is recommended that you undergo a series of four to eight treatment at four to eight week intervals depending on the area treated. Arm and leg hair tend to be easiest to remove compared to those on the face, lip and chin.
